Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
Melanie Cheng is an East Vancouver mother of three teenagers, an award winning paralegal with 20 years’ experience, and a public education advocate with a decade advocating for children, families, and schools.

In 2016, Melanie helped lead the fight against closing 12 Vancouver schools. She mobilized communities to support the campaign which gathered 18,000 petition signatures. She worked alongside other parent leaders to hand-deliver the petition to the Minister of Education.

In 2021, Melanie launched the campaign to save the Graham Bruce Elementary field from condo development, drawing national attention to school-land protection and planning for growing communities. She received a King Charles III Coronation Medal.

In 2024, Melanie challenged the Vancouver School Board’s secrecy surrounding plans to subdivide school sites. She sought transparent disclosure through the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Her work prompted an inquiry and contributed to a precedent-setting decision in 2025.

Elected twice as prior Chair of the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council, Melanie championed student well-being, parent engagement, and inclusive dialogue. She brought forward a 2025 motion passed by the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils calling for provincial standards for fair, consistent parent engagement across British Columbia’s public education system.

Melanie founded the Collingwood Recreation Society, bringing recreation opportunities to hundreds of East Vancouver students. She was also a leader of the 2025 Save Carleton campaign, mobilizing families to protect Vancouver’s oldest school and advocate for safe, accessible student spaces, child care, heritage preservation, and long-term investment in a rapidly growing, equity-seeking community.
