About VoteMate

VoteMate is a free, non-partisan voter information website for Canadian elections. It's run by Laef Kucheran, a web developer from Vancouver who works on VoteMate in his spare time.

For federal, provincial, and some municipal elections, VoteMate provides profiles on every candidate for office; interactive, side-by-side platform comparisons on every issue in the election; a tool to help voters find their riding; and a tool to help voters make their plan to vote.

VoteMate is funded out of Laef's own pocket, as well as through the generosity of his Patreon patrons and Buy Me a Coffee contributors. Laef also contracts with the non-partisan youth engagement NGO New Majority to make a New Majority-branded version of VoteMate for their audience.

VoteMate doesn't run ads, and doesn't take money from political parties, candidates, or causes.

What tools can your organisation use?

You can embed many of VoteMate's tools and resources directly into your website. This can be useful when you're building out a webpage related to an election, and want to include an easy way for visitors to make a voting plan, find their riding, see a candidate list, or learn what the parties are promising.

VoteMate also has a tool to help you generate links and QR codes to any part of the site — the candidate lists and profiles, the parties' promises on a given topic, the Make a Plan to Vote tool, or the side-by-side platform comparison. You can use the links in your website or email newsletter, and print the QR codes on posters or pamphlets.

Note: The demos below use real profiles, platforms, and voting methods from the 2024 BC provincial election. Candidates and issue topics are selected at random. VoteMate doesn't endorse any candidate displayed, and none of the candidates displayed are endorsing VoteMate.

The Make a Plan to Vote tool

Sometimes, the hardest part of doing something is making a plan to do it. Once voters have a plan to vote, it's much more likely they'll go out and do it when the time comes.

VoteMate's interactive Make a Plan to Vote tool walks voters through making a plan: confirming eligibility; selecting their voting method, place, and time; learning about the candidates and party platforms; and finally printing up their plan, adding an event to go vote to their digital calendar, or signing up for an automatic SMS voting reminder.

Vote plans are stored on the voter's own device. If any part of the vote plan needs to be sent to VoteMate's servers, the voter is warned in advance and must opt in.

Candidate lists and profiles

To help voters research the people vying for election, VoteMate compiles profiles on each candidate in every riding. We invite the candidates and parties to submit profiles to us, and do our best to automatically scrape missing profiles from the party websites, putting everything in one place.

VoteMate lets you embed the candidate list page for any riding directly into your organisation's website, and helps you create QR codes or links to any candidate profile or list.

Side-by-side platforms

To help voters understand what the parties are promising, VoteMate compiles a platform comparison page, showing party and candidate promises on every topic in the election, side-by-side.

The page features the platforms of every party that had seats at dissolution, with each of their promises entered in manually by us. We also invite every candidate and party to submit their platforms to us — if they do, their promises are included as well.

The Find Your Riding tool

If your organisation serves an audience spanning multiple ridings, it can be difficult to link them to riding-specific resources like candidate profiles. VoteMate solves that with our Find Your Riding tool.

Voters can enter their postal code or their riding's name to find their riding. The tool then takes the voter to their riding's candidate list or Make a Plan to Vote tool.
