Andy Shen is a community leader, public affairs professional and advocate for clear, accountable public service.

For more than 14 years, Andy has worked at the intersection of government, health care, public policy and community engagement. His career has given him experience working with government ministries, health authorities, elected officials, professionals, community partners and the public, and a firsthand understanding of how decisions are made around a table can affect people in their everyday lives.

Andy has spent his career helping organizations navigate complex issues and communicate clearly with the people they serve. At the BC Pharmacy Association, he worked closely with pharmacists across the province, the BC Ministry of Health and provincial health authorities to advocate for better health outcomes. That work included helping implement minor ailment prescribing, which lets patients go directly to their pharmacist for common conditions like UTIs, pink eye and contraceptives, instead of waiting to see a doctor — driving efficiency in the health care system and saving provincial health care dollars.

More recently, Andy worked with BC Doctors of Optometry on the province-wide rollout of a kindergarten vision screening program, collaborating with health authorities, school districts, health professionals, schools and families. His work has given him a firsthand understanding of how government programs affect people in their everyday lives — and the importance of making sure those programs work for the community they serve.

Andy also brings experience from the Parliament of Canada, where he worked in communications, community relations and media relations for a Member of Parliament. There, he handled constituent concerns, worked with the media and helped communicate on sensitive political and public policy issues.

These experience have shaped Andy’s approach to public service: listen first, understand the facts, bring people together and follow through.

As the Township of Langley continues to grow, Andy believes it’s time to go back to basics. For too long, the Township hasn’t invested enough in the roads, amenities, parks and public safety a growing community needs — and that investment doesn’t get any cheaper by waiting. Every year it’s delayed, it costs more. Andy believes infrastructure should be in place before growth happens, not after residents move in, so we’re not leaving the bill, and the gridlock, for the next generation to sort out.

Andy is running as an independent — not for a slate — because he believes the people elected to Council should be accountable to the residents who elected them, not to a slate.

Outside of his professional work, Andy has built an online community of more than 135,000 followers reaching millions of people through digital content and community engagement. That experience has reinforced his belief that communication is a two-way street: leadership starts with listening.

Andy lives in Willoughby with his wife, who works at Langley Memorial Hospital, and their two sons. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Simon Fraser University. He speaks English and Mandarin. Above all, Andy wants Langley to be a quiet, safe place to raise a family — a place where kids can go outside and be kids.
